Contemporary dance rooted in the Egyptian dance tradition
as-Sayf is an innovative group of dancers drawing inspiration from traditional Egyptian dance. We create shows for all audiences, adults as well as children, and offer workshops to convey the inherent strength, beauty and limitless source of the Egyptian dance.
Inner Circles - a whirling dance experience, currently being performed, is inspired by Egyptian Sufi tradtion. More info below.
Egyptian dance is powerful and flowing, fiery yet playfully earthy. We work and create in the Arabic tradition where dance and music are entwined, an inseparable unit.
Exploration and freedom of movement paired with curiosity are fundamental to as-Sayf. By use of improvisation, as-Sayf collaborate with nature and environment, space and surroundings, to fuse our work with site-specific locations.
as-Sayf has been instrumental in bringing the Egyptian dance tradition to the general public of Sweden.
The dance company consists of five dancers who have performed their work at scenes and festivals in both Europe and the US. A selection: Dansens Hus and Moderna Dansteatern, Stockholm, Belley, France, Burg Herzberg, Germany and Salt Lake City, US.
We are as-Sayf Annika Koskinen, Stina Löfström, Minna Laaksonen, Anna Wennström och Cais-Marie Björnlod.
Inner Circles – a whirling dance experience
Inner circles is an exploration of meditation in movement. Abstract shapes paired with a body language rooted in Egypt invite the audience to rest for a moment, to join the dancers to take part in the ritual of listening to your heart.
Bodies in dance between earth and sky, in balance with the music, bodies in and out of tune with each other, and the movement from the dancers breath.
